Silver Lining.

Our old friend Mario passed away from a heart attack last week and it hit everyone pretty hard. It was a shock not only because was he just 48, but also because Mario was universally loved and was one of those people who you'd never really forget. He was definitely a one-of-a-kind character. True, I hadn't seen or talked to Mario since my wedding (which, incidentally, he crashed) and I had kind of drifted away from him since the days the Old Crew used to hang out back in the early '90's, but it still stunned me. Mario--my old partner in crime--gone.

Anyway, this past weekend was his funeral and it was tough. But, oddly, it gave a few of us from the Old Crew the chance to get together. Max came up from North Carolina and stayed with us for the weekend and Roy offered up his home Saturday night so a few of us could stay up into the wee hours drinking and reminiscing. It wasn't the best circumstances, obviously, but we all agreed that it was good to get together again--and we also agreed to do a better job of staying in touch in the future.

So, in a way, I guess that was the silver lining: reconnecting. And I have a feeling Mario would have liked that very much.
