For the first time in two or three weeks,
today's The Washington Post (also known as That Liberal Rag by
some people around here) had no editorials on the planned Muslim
community center in New York. No editorials for it and no editorials
against it. Hopefully, it'll be a permanent break, but I doubt it
somehow.
And my opinion on the whole thing since you didn't ask? Well, I
absolutely believe they have the right to build a community center
(that, yes, will include a mosque) wherever they'd like as long as they
adhere to local and state building codes or what-have-you. Is it wise
for them (the Cordoba Institute) to build it somewhat close to Ground
Zero? Well, that I'm not so sure about.
It's not that I'm advocating backing down in the face of religious
intolerance--it's just that I'm not so sure that the Cordoba Institute's
desire to help promote healing and mend fences between Muslims and
non-Muslims through the proposed community center won't backfire.
In the end, will they able to foster unity if it gets
built? That remains to be seen, I guess, but I sure hope so. |
