Apparently, I'm Not On The List.

Anyone else out there watching "Heroes" with any regularity? Beth and I decided to start watching it last week which, in hindsight, may not have been a good idea. I mean, do we really need to start watching yet another ensemble-cast supernatural-tinted weekly serial TV show? Isn't "Lost" (which I'm about done with, by the way) enough for us?

To make things worse, we're trying to pick it up in the middle of the season (I think we started with Episode 5 and have seen it up through Episode 10. Or maybe we've seen it up through Episode 11, except for Episode 10. Or...Ah hell, I don't know.) which leads to a lot of "Uh, what the fuck is that about?" and "Who's that guy again?" and general exasperation. I read an episode guide online, but I'm still Lost (pun intended). I know even regular viewers aren't supposed to understand all of it anyway, but I do have a lot of questions that other people might be able to answer. Who's Sylar and why is he trying to kill Claire? Who's the guy in India and what does he have to do with anything? What is H.R.G.'s role--good guy or bad guy? What's the deal with all of those paintings? Yeesh. I've got a headache.

Despite the confusion over what's going on and who's who, I like the premise of the show and I think it's very well done. But I'm not sure if I'm going to continue watching it because it has two strikes against it:

One, I haven't found a character I particularly like or can identify with yet. Hiro--the guy who can stop time--is pretty funny, but I haven't decided if he's a TV stereotype or not yet. Beyond him, all of the characters are disposable, as far as I'm concerned.

And two--and this is a big one for me--the show breaks one of my cardinal rules for watchability: No twin, clone, alter-ego or doppelganger characters. Yup, they have one in "Heroes." Jeez. I can't stand that. I started to watch the new "Battlestar Galactica" when it came out, but as soon as they came up with a cloned character, I was done. Turned the TV off right then and there. ˇNo más!

So, I guess we'll see if it gets a third strike or not. I'll give it a few more weeks. Hopefully, I won't get all caught up in it and then have it get a third strike.

Maybe I should have taken several friends' advice and started watching "My Name Is Earl" instead.

Oh--and I also want to mention that Beth and I are now an aunt and an uncle (respectively, of course). Regular Reader and sister-in-law Wanda had a little boy on Monday. Pretty cool. The kid doesn't have a name yet, but I'm pulling for "Snacks".

(Actually, I meant to write about this today, but I got sidetracked with the whole "Heroes" thing and now I can't remember what I was going to say beyond the "Snacks" comment. And since there's no way to easily segue between talking about my new nephew-by-marriage and talking about a frustrating TV show, I won't even try. Anyway, congrats all around.)
