This year, it seems that a lot of teams (I'm talking softball here) are
complaining about other teams talking walks. At least three or four
times that I've taken a walk this year I've heard the pitcher or one of
the infielders mutter under their breath something along the lines of
"We're here to hit, not walk" or something like that. Sure, I could
understand their frustration if we were beating the living crap out of
them or if we were up by 10 runs in the last inning, but that's not the
case. Usually, the complaints come in very close ballgames.
Do these people understand that when a pitcher has walked five people in
row that it's not a good idea to swing at the first pitch? Do they
understand that swinging at a pitch that's going to land a foot in front
of the plate usually doesn't result in a hit? Apparently not. And I
know they don't understand that I won't swing at anything unless
it's in my zone: outside corner or a little bit off the plate (okay, I
try not to swing at anything that's out of my zone).
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I always thought softball was a team
sport and not an individual sport. |
