Yeah, we're moving. It's time to go.
We've been talking about the possibility of
moving down to North Carolina for
quite awhile now and we
finally cleared the last hurdle: me.
As I mentioned
before, I had been
resistant to the whole idea of leaving my friends, leaving my house,
leaving softball, and leaving my comfort zone. But now I realize that
moving to North Carolina makes sense. First off, we really don't want to
raise our not-here-yet-but-will-be-someday kids in this area. Too
fast-paced. Too stressful. We want our kids to grow up somewhere a
little less tense, as Beth puts it. That makes sense to me.
Second, the cost of living is much cheaper down there and if I want to
continue with my stay-at-home newsletter business, moving to that area
is the smart thing to do. And finally, we have plenty of family and
friends down there so it's not like we're moving to Duluth, Minnesota or somewhere
like that.
So when I really sit down and think about it, I feel
pretty good about the idea of moving. At least that's what I've been
told how I feel (that's just a joke, honey).
Anyway, the biggest thing is probably going to be
selling the house. Not only is it not a seller's market, but Fairfax City
has been designated as one of those "declining markets" and that's a
real pisser. Stupid mortgage underwriters. Houses have been sitting on
the market a long time around here and I wouldn't be surprised if ours
wasn't any different. We do plan on listing it at an aggressive price,
but you just never know. It could sit on the market for a year--and
that's kinda scary.
Actually, now that I think
about it, I'm not as concerned with selling the house as I am with
getting it ready to sell. That's the real headache. We're not
doing any upgrades or remodeling, but we need a lot of things to be brought
up to standards. We need new carpeting, a new front door, a little
electrical work done, the chimney to be fixed, etc., etc. It's just a
big pain in the ass. Also, I'm planning on having a pre-listing home
inspection done and I'm not looking forward to that either. I'm afraid
the home inspector will come in and say that the whole house is listing
10 degrees to the west or that there's a nest of Komodo dragons living
behind the stove. Great.
As it stands right now, we're looking to have
the house ready to be put on the market in early summer. If all goes as
planned (i.e., the house sells in a reasonable amount of time and the
Komodo dragons are flushed out) we'll be in the Raleigh area when the
leaves start turning pretty colors. At least that's the plan.
We've been dragging our feet a little bit on all of these home projects,
but we'll get going soon enough. And then it will be time
to...well...get going.
