Statistics that were released by the U.N. today:

This year, AIDS has claimed approximately 2.9
million lives and another 4.3 million people became infected with HIV.

Worldwide, more than 39 million people are
HIV-positive.

The sub-Saharan region of Africa has the
highest concentration of the world's infections with 63 percent (24.7
million people).

In East Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern
Europe, there are 21 percent more people infected with HIV than two
years ago.

There are 17.7 million women who are
HIV-positive--and increase of more than a million in the last two
years.

Asia is the second most infect region in the
world (8 million people).

In North America, 1.4 million people are
infected and the U.S. is estimated to have 1.2 million people.
-
African Americans made up 50 percent of new
AIDS diagnoses between 2001 and 2004 in the U.S. and Hispanics made up
20 percent of new cases.
-
Since the first case of AIDS in 1981, over 25
million people have died worldwide.
