To understand what is truly
Important, you have to strip everything
away. You have to get past the prick
that cut you off, the overtime loss in
the playoffs, the DMV Nazis, and the
painfully slow internet connection. You
have to set aside the brand of
toothpaste you stand by, the nights of
outstanding sex, the new office
furniture at work, and the favorite
shirt in your closet. You have to
ignore the city doing street maintenance
at 7 am, the frustration of being stuck
with the bar tab, the funky hair days,
and the long lines at Safeway. You have
to take away the satisfaction of
teaching your dog to high-five, the
feeling of being nice and sauced, the
finishing of a book, and the $20
instant-winner lottery ticket. You have
to relinquish the fantasies, the
stresses, the cheering, the arguments,
the dancing, and the crying. You have
to downplay the graduations, the
divorces, the weddings, the illnesses,
the promotions, and the funerals. You
even have to shut out the career, the
family, the children, the possessions,
the friends, and the love.
Then, when you have almost
nothing, you'll be able to see it.
You'll be able to see the one single
thing that in the end is above
everything else. And that thing is
yourself. When you have nothing else at
all, you will still have you. And that
isn't sad at all. Instead, it's a
comfort and it's a strength. Simply,
you are The King.
